Lemon and Basil All-Purpose Cleaner

Made with Non-toxic, Natural Ingredients

I don’t know about everyone else, but I have been doing some serious spring cleaning the last couple of weeks. After being cooped up in our house all winter, I am ready for every thing to be fresh and clean. Most people probably pull out the typical cleaning products you see advertised on TV or in stores to do their spring cleaning. I used to do the exact same thing until I started learning more about the harmful ingredients in many of these products. I decided to make my own cleaner with gentle, non toxic ingredients. Using this All-Purpose Cleaner has allowed me to cut out a lot of the toxic products I was using before.

Many of the chemicals in store bought cleaning products are known to cause respiratory problems,  endocrine disruption, liver, kidney, and skin damage, and are harmful to the environment. Even some of the so-called “natural” cleaning products contain these chemicals. Those aren’t the kind of chemicals I want on the surfaces of my home, especially not with young children who are constantly touching things and putting them in their mouths. Check out this informative article if you are interested in learning more about the specific chemicals in cleaning products and the damage they can cause.

Alternatively, this cleaner only contains natural and gentle ingredients. It doesn’t get much safer than vinegar, castille soap, essential oils, and basil.  This All-Purpose Cleaner is super quick to make. For about two minutes of your time, you can have a toxin free, budget friendly, amazing smelling cleaner for your home!

Where to Get the Supplies

The ingredients in this cleaner are all fairly easy to come by if you know where to look. Gallon sized containers of white vinegar can be found at the local grocery store for under $3.  This is the castille soap I use and it can be purchased on Amazon or at select grocery stores.  Mountain Rose Herbs is where I buy all my essential oils including the lemon oil I use in this recipe.  The fresh basil can be easily grown at home but I buy it at the store during the winter months when I don’t have any available. I also found this adorable glass spray bottle on Amazon and I love using it for this cleaner.

How to Use the Cleaner

This All-Purpose Cleaner can be used for many different surfaces in your home. It is very effective for kitchen counters, bathroom surfaces, floors, dusting furniture, washing walls and doors, and cleaning blinds. Mirrors and windows are the only surfaces I don’t recommend using the cleaner on as the castille soap can cause them to appear streaky. Also, use caution if you have granite counter tops. I have heard that vinegar can erode granite over time but I have not personally tested this out as I do not have any granite in my home.

Using the cleaner is quite simple. Just spray a small amount on the surface you are cleaning and wipe with a clean cloth or paper towel. You could also spray the cleaner directly onto your cloth and wipe the surface with the dampened cloth.
